Kent Head Coach to Step Down

Matt Walker, head coach of Kent, will be stepping down from his position at the conclusion of the 2024 season, bringing an end to his eight-year tenure. Walker, who was appointed head coach in 2017 after serving as assistant coach, spent 16 years at Kent as a player, amassing over 16,000 runs across all formats.

During his time as coach, the 50-year-old led Kent to significant success, including winning the T20 Blast in 2021 and the One-Day Cup in 2022. Additionally, he oversaw Kent's promotion to Division One of the County Championship in 2018.

In a statement, Walker said it was the right time for fresh ideas and new leadership to take Kent forward in men's cricket, something he has thoroughly enjoyed during his time with the club. He reflected on his involvement in Kent's promotion and trophy wins as highlights but emphasised that the most rewarding part of his role has been working with the players and coaching staff.

Despite past successes, Kent has struggled this season. They are currently at the bottom of the County Championship table, facing relegation to Division Two after winning just one match with three games left. In the T20 Blast, they finished last in the southern group, and in the One-Day Cup, they ended up seventh, missing out on the knockout stages.

Kent's director of cricket, Simon Cook, praised Walker’s contributions, both as a player and coach, noting that Walker is among a select few to have won trophies in both capacities. Cook added that Walker's name will always be linked with Kent's recent achievements.

Kent’s remaining fixtures for the season include matches against Hampshire, Nottinghamshire, and Durham, with their final game scheduled for 26 September.
