McCullum Takes on Dual Role as England's Coach
Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand cricket legend, has been named England’s new men’s white-ball coach, a role he will balance with his current position as the Test coach.
The 42-year-old is set to replace Australian Matthew Mott, who stepped down following the T20 World Cup earlier this summer. McCullum will officially begin his new responsibilities in January 2025.
Under McCullum’s guidance, the Test team experienced a remarkable transformation alongside captain Ben Stokes. McCullum expressed his excitement about signing a new contract that expands his duties, keeping him with England cricket until 2027.
He shared that he felt ready to take on the challenge of leading both teams, expressing his eagerness to work with captain Jos Buttler to build on the existing strong foundation.
McCullum also acknowledged that Rob Key, England's director of cricket, presented a compelling vision for the future of the team. McCullum noted that the unified coaching structure, particularly with a more manageable schedule next year, aligned perfectly with his own outlook.
He added that the prospect of leading both squads was invigorating, highlighting the vast talent pool within English cricket.
Meanwhile, Marcus Trescothick will temporarily take charge of the white-ball team for their upcoming series against Australia and in the Caribbean. McCullum’s first major task will be leading England on a tour of India before the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next February.
