No Doubts: Jacob Bethell Embraces Test No. 3 Challenge

Jacob Bethell’s rapid rise to England’s No. 3 Test position has drawn comparisons to cricket legends like Garfield Sobers and Steve Smith. At just 21, Bethell’s third international debut in as many months came during England’s eight-wicket victory at Hagley Oval. Facing bowlers of Matt Henry and Tim Southee’s calibre, Bethell delivered a composed, unbeaten 50 from 37 balls, steering his team to a memorable win.

Unperturbed by his swift elevation, Bethell expressed confidence in his adaptability, stating he had consistently performed better when facing tougher competition. Reflecting on his position in the batting order, he admitted some initial surprise but welcomed the opportunity, revealing his preference for batting higher up. Growing up in Barbados, Bethell honed his back-foot game, a skill that impressed observers, including captain Ben Stokes. His ability to handle pressure and execute powerful shots, particularly during the run chase, underscored his readiness for Test cricket.

Bethell’s journey from Warwickshire to international prominence highlights his versatility as a spin-bowling all-rounder, though he has struggled to secure a defined red-ball role at the county level. A move to England at 13, endorsed by family friend Garfield Sobers, set him on this path. Looking ahead, Bethell’s burgeoning career includes a lucrative IPL stint with Royal Challengers Bangalore, an opportunity he hopes will refine his game further. Notably, he expressed excitement about sharing the field with Virat Kohli, whose presence he believes will add invaluable experience to his development.
