On this day in 2015, England appointed Trevor Bayliss as their new coach
On this day in 2015, the England and Wales Cricket Board announced that Trevor Bayliss would be England's next coach.
The Australian succeeded Peter Moores after beating out initial front-runner and compatriot Jason Gillespie.
Bayliss commented on his appointment, saying, "It's an honour to be selected England coach. There’s a great opportunity to help (Test and one-day international captains) Alastair Cook and Eoin Morgan shape the direction and development of their respective teams. I am also looking forward to working alongside Paul Farbrace once again as we have a similar outlook on the game, get on well after two years working together and have kept in touch. What particularly excites me about the role is the chance to work with a very talented group of players. I firmly believe that the team has a bright future and I’ll be doing everything I can to help them realise their potential and achieve success on a consistent basis.”
Bayliss got off to a good start when England won the Ashes at home in 2015, followed by a 2-1 triumph over number one Test side South Africa in 2015/2016.
Arguably his most notable moment was in 2019, when England won their first World Cup at Lord's in a dramatic final against New Zealand, aided by Ben Stokes' man-of-the-match performance as the hosts won in a Super Over.
After declining to prolong his contract, Bayliss took leadership of England for the final time later that year, in a 2-2 Test series draw against Australia.
