Sam Northeast, Colin Ingram centuries deny Yorkshire first win of season

In-form duo Sam Northeast and Colin Ingram hit superb rearguard centuries on the final day to help Glamorgan earn a Vitality County Championship draw against frustrated Yorkshire at Headingley.

South Africa veteran Ingram and unbeaten captain Northeast continued their excellent starts to the season with patient scores of 113 and 142 to complete a double-century partnership for the fourth wicket in their side's second innings.

Yorkshire had posted a first-innings lead of 298 shortly after lunch on the third day and would have been confident of securing a first win of 2024 at the fifth attempt when Glamorgan resumed on 171 for three.

But when thunder and lightning struck just before 4.20 pm, they were 372 for seven with a lead of 74. There was no way back.

Pre-season Division Two favourites Yorkshire have now gone five games without a win, ensuring a slow start to their promotion bid.

They were thwarted by Northeast, the country's leading run-scorers with 561, who hit 15 fours off 336 balls.

While Yorkshire took 16 points from their fourth draw and one defeat, Glamorgan took 10 points from their fourth successive draw.

There is still plenty of time for Yorkshire - nine games to be precise - to get on a roll and secure a top-two finish.

But they must find a way to take 20 wickets in a match, something they haven't done at Headingley since June 2021, a run of 15 Championship matches.

Glamorgan began the day 127 runs behind, with Ingram on 43 and Northeast on 46.

The pair ended the day among the top three run-scorers in the division after sharing a stand of 210 - their county's highest ever fourth-wicket partnership in first-class encounters with Yorkshire. Ingram has 467 runs to his name.

While this used pitch showed signs of turning over the four days, it did not deteriorate as much as Yorkshire would have hoped in Harry Brook's last of five early-season appearances before England's T20 World Cup preparations.

The left-handed Ingram and 2021 Yorkshire loanee Northeast were alert against the spin of Dom Bess and Dan Moriarty and the seam of Ben Coad and Matthew Revis, the latter two taking a new ball in the morning.

Yorkshire used four spinners in total, with part-time offs Joe Root and Adam Lyth also deployed as they raced through the overs. Each took two wickets.

Ingram hit Revis for three successive boundaries to move into the eighties and then brought up his second century of the season from 202 balls just before lunch.

Glamorgan reached lunch on 277 for three, trailing by just 21, and Northeast reached his final century in the early afternoon.

By then, the Welsh side had taken the lead, and what had seemed an unlikely draw at the start of the day had become a very likely one against a home attack that had been hurt - literally - by the absence of injured fast bowler Matthew Fisher.

He injured his left ankle while fielding just before tea on day three and did not return to the field.

For the second time this season, Ingram and Northeast both reached three figures. Northeast's previous hundred was his record-breaking 335 against Middlesex last month - the highest individual score ever made at Lord's.

Northeast lifted his bat early in the afternoon for 226 balls.

Moments earlier, Ingram had taken Root's off-spin to mid-off for the first wicket of the day, leaving the score at 304 for four in the 100th over.

By then, Glamorgan had a five-run lead and the hard work was done.

Root forced Chris Cooke to play on and Lyth trapped Tom Bevan and James Harris lbw either side of tea to leave Glamorgan on 370 for seven with a lead of 72.

But the weather intervened to the delight of Glamorgan, whose captain was outstanding.
