Sawyer Reappointed as NZ Women’s Coach Through 2026

Ben Sawyer has secured a two-year extension as head coach of the New Zealand women’s cricket team, ensuring his tenure until December 2026. This period encompasses significant tournaments, including the ODI World Cup in India in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in England in 2026. 

Sawyer, who guided New Zealand to their maiden T20 World Cup title earlier this year with a victory over South Africa in the final, has earned praise for his impact on the team. White-ball captain Sophie Devine expressed her excitement about his reappointment, highlighting the progress under his leadership and the importance of continuity as the team builds for upcoming challenges. 

Initially appointed in June 2022 on a two-year deal, Sawyer’s extension follows a comprehensive review by New Zealand Cricket (NZC). His efforts have been pivotal in transforming the White Ferns, who began the year with just one win in 13 T20Is but turned their fortunes around to claim the T20 World Cup in the UAE. 

Liz Green, NZC’s head of women’s high performance, lauded Sawyer’s role in fostering belief and trust within the squad and emphasised the value of stability for the team’s development and long-term planning. 

New Zealand’s next assignment is a three-match ODI series against Australia, starting December 19 in Wellington. The squad announcement is expected soon, and fans attending the matches will have the opportunity to view the T20 World Cup trophy up close.
