Shubman Gill in a test run against England in Visakhapatnam

He had passed 35 only once in his previous 12 innings - 104 off 147 balls.

With the likes of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and Ravindra Jadeja set to return to the top order eventually - if not in this series - there was considerable pressure on the number three batsman as Shubman Gill began his knock today on 29 for one and slipped to 30 for two. For Gill, it was very important and very satisfying to be able to score runs at No. 3, and for him, it felt really good.

With the lost Yashasvi and Rohit [Sharma] bhai who gave the team a good start at the top of the order it was important to get a big lead and get as many runs as possible. Despite the string of low scores, Gill said he wasn't putting any pressure on himself. He said he thinks that's part of the game because if a player does well everyone is applauded than it would be fake. He is a player who likes to look at the situation, play to the situation and take chances to gain the percentage for cricket.

Normally, a Gill century is celebrated with a bow. But this time there wasn't one. He just thought the team’s job was not done. That is why he didn't celebrate. However, when he was given out lbw to Tom Hartley by umpire Marais Erasmus, there was a chance he could have been dismissed for four. DRS, and admitted batting partner persuaded him. There were other close calls too. But he survived.
