Surrey Edge Closer to Championship Hat-Trick
Surrey took another huge step toward their third consecutive County Championship title after a commanding 10-wicket win over Durham, with a day to spare, at The Oval. The victory, Surrey’s eighth of the season, leaves them in prime position at the top of the table, with only one more round remaining.
Starting the third day 152 runs behind, Durham’s chances quickly faded as they lost two wickets in the very first over, bowled by Dan Worrall. Both Worrall and Sam Curran, in just his second Championship match of the year, claimed four wickets each, as Durham crumbled to 177 in their second innings. Emilio Gay, who contributed 48 runs, was the only batter to offer significant resistance.
With only 25 runs needed to wrap up the win, Surrey captain Rory Burns and opener Dom Sibley easily reached the target within five overs. The win, their sixth at The Oval this season, continues Surrey’s dominant form at home, with only Somerset managing to hold them to a draw earlier in the campaign.
Surrey’s 23 points from the match boosted their total to 221, giving them a 31-point lead over Somerset, who are still battling at Old Trafford. The final round will see Surrey head to Chelmsford to face Essex, while Somerset host Hampshire in what could be a decisive fixture for the championship.
The tone for Durham’s collapse was set early when Worrall dismissed Dan Hogg, taking out his leg stump, and Ben McKinney, who was bowled by an exceptional delivery. Jordan Clark soon followed up by removing Alex Lees, leaving Durham three wickets down within the first half-hour.
Sam Curran added to the damage by trapping David Bedingham lbw with his sixth ball and later clean-bowling Ollie Robinson with a late in-swinger, reducing Durham to a perilous 74-6.
Emilio Gay, making his debut for Durham ahead of a permanent move from Northamptonshire, provided some hope by adding 46 runs with Bas de Leede. However, Worrall and Curran continued their relentless attack, dismissing both Gay and De Leede to leave Durham in tatters. Tom Lawes further compounded the damage by removing James Minto, and Curran finished off the innings with another brilliant in-swinger to bowl out Chemar Holder.
Surrey's pursuit of the small target was little more than a formality, as Burns and Sibley quickly secured the win and further strengthened their position in the title race.
