Tim Southee Announces Test Cricket Retirement

Former New Zealand captain Tim Southee has revealed plans to retire from Test cricket later this year. The 35-year-old fast bowler will bid farewell to the longest format after the three-match series against England in November and December, unless the Black Caps make it to the 2024 World Test Championship final.

Southee’s final Test appearance is set to take place at his home ground, Seddon Park in Hamilton, from December 13 to 18.

"Representing New Zealand was all I ever dreamed of growing up," Southee said.

He described playing for the Black Caps for 18 years as both an honour and a privilege, adding that he felt the time was right to step away from the game that had given him so much. He expressed gratitude for the incredible journey and said he wouldn’t change a thing.

An Illustrious Career

Southee was instrumental in New Zealand's triumph in the inaugural World Test Championship final in 2021. After succeeding Kane Williamson as Test captain in December 2022, he recently stepped down, with Tom Latham taking over the role.

With 385 wickets in 102 Test matches at an average of 29.87, Southee stands as New Zealand's second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, trailing only Sir Richard Hadlee (431). He remains the sole cricketer to have taken over 300 Test wickets, 200 ODI wickets, and 100 T20I wickets, a testament to his consistency and versatility.

Black Caps head coach Gary Stead praised Southee's resilience and durability, highlighting his ability to deliver in crucial moments while maintaining fitness throughout his career. Stead acknowledged the impact Southee has had on the team, emphasising his deep care for the Black Caps' performance and legacy.

What’s Next for Southee?

While Southee plans to continue playing domestic and franchise cricket, his participation in the upcoming white-ball series against Sri Lanka is yet to be decided.

Meanwhile, the Black Caps have named uncapped players Nathan Smith and Jacob Duffy in the squad for the England series. All-rounder Smith, 26, earns his first Test call-up after debuting in an ODI against Sri Lanka in November. Kane Williamson also rejoins the squad following a groin injury, while left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner will be available for the second and third Tests.
