"We've played like invincibles," Kolkata defeats Chennai in the Indian Premier League final
After defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets in the championship match, Kolkata Knight Riders emerged victorious in the Indian Premier League.
When Mitchell Starc brilliantly bowled Sunrisers opener Abhishek Sharma in the opening over, he set the tone for a spectacular KKR performance.
The Sunrisers were bowled out for 113, the lowest score in an IPL final, and never recovered.
Andre Russell claimed 3-19, while Starc and Harshit Rana each claimed two wickets for the KKR bowlers.
Then, in a 91-run partnership with Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Venkatesh Iyer smashed an undefeated 52 off 26 balls, helping Shreyas Iyer's team reach their goal in 10.3 overs.
After finishing first in their group, KKR's victory in Chennai guarantees them a third IPL title, their first since 2014.
Pat Cummins, the captain of Australia's Sunrisers, will have to wait another year to attempt and build on his one and only IPL victory from 2016.
"It was comprehensive today. This is what we demanded from the team and every individual and they stood up," said KKR captain Shreyas Iyer. "It’s hard to describe what we are feeling right now. We’ve played like invincibles throughout the season and there is so much to cherish right now."
