Women's Cricket Match Postponed Due to Planned Protests

A women’s county cricket match has been delayed indefinitely owing to anticipated far-right demonstrations in Chelmsford today.

Essex women were scheduled to compete against Kent at the Cloud County Ground in Chelmsford. However, the game has been postponed to ensure the safety of spectators, players, and staff amid the threat of protests.

Essex Cricket, in coordination with local police, decided to postpone the fixture after learning Chelmsford is among 37 cities targeted for demonstrations by far-right groups.

A statement from Essex Cricket announced yesterday, "Due to planned protests on Wednesday, August 7, the match between Essex Women and Kent Women at The Cloud County Ground has been postponed. The safety of all spectators, players, and staff is of utmost importance. This decision was made following consultations with Essex Police, the ECB [England and Wales Cricket Board], and our diverse workforce."

The club assured fans they would be informed of the new date once rescheduled, and ticket holders will receive further details via email.

Essex Police Assistant Chief Constable Andy Mariner issued a warning to potential troublemakers, stating, "We want people to come to Essex and enjoy everything we have to offer this summer. However, our message is clear – if you're planning to cause trouble, don't bother. We will be ready and waiting, and you will be arrested."

The unrest follows a tragic incident in Southport where a stabbing at a dance class resulted in the deaths of three young girls and injuries to several others.

Approximately 250 spectators were expected for the friendly match, dubbed "the Battle of the Bridge," referencing the Dartford Crossing that connects Essex and Kent.
